Glossary of Terms

Active Device

A surveillance device that is powered on and capable of transmitting or recording data in real time.

AirTag

A Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) tracking device made by Apple, designed to locate lost items but often misused for stalking or vehicle tracking.

Analog Transmitter

An older style listening or video device that transmits signals continuously on a fixed frequency.

Asset Tracking

Legitimate use of GPS or tracking technology to monitor company vehicles, equipment, or property with consent.

BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy)

A short-range wireless technology used by smart tags (AirTag, Tile, SmartTag) to communicate with nearby devices.

Bluetooth Beacon

A small BLE device that broadcasts an identifier picked up by nearby phones or receivers to determine location.

Bug Sweep

A physical and electronic inspection to locate hidden surveillance devices such as microphones, cameras, GPS trackers, or transmitters.

Bugging Device

Any covert electronic device used to listen, record, transmit, or track without the subject’s knowledge.

Cellular Tracker

A GPS device that uses cellular networks (LTE, 4G, 5G) to transmit location data to a remote server or app.

Covert Camera

A hidden camera disguised as an everyday object (charger, clock, smoke detector, etc.).

Counter-Surveillance

Actions taken to detect, prevent, or defeat surveillance efforts.

Data Logger

A device that records location or other data internally rather than transmitting it in real time.

Dormant Device

A surveillance device that is powered off or only activates intermittently to avoid detection.

Electronic Surveillance

The use of electronic devices to monitor conversations, movements, or activities.

Faraday Container

A metal enclosure that blocks radio frequency signals, used to prevent a device from transmitting.

Frequency (RF)

Radio waves used by wireless devices to transmit information.

GPS (Global Positioning System)

A satellite-based navigation system that allows devices to calculate geographic location.

GPS Tracker

A device that determines location using GPS satellites and reports it via cellular, Wi-Fi, or stored data.

Hardwired Tracker

A tracking device connected directly to a vehicle’s electrical system for continuous power.

Hidden Microphone

A covert audio recording or transmitting device placed to capture conversations.

IMSI Catcher

A sophisticated surveillance tool that impersonates a cellular tower to intercept phone communications (typically government-grade).

Interior Sweep

Inspection of the inside of a vehicle or room for hidden devices.

Magnetic Tracker

A battery-powered GPS device attached to metal surfaces using magnets.

NLJD (Non-Linear Junction Detector)

A professional tool used to locate electronic components even when powered off.

OBD-II Port

A diagnostic port found in all vehicles made after 1996, sometimes misused to power GPS trackers.

Passive Device

A surveillance device that records data locally without transmitting.

Physical Sweep

Manual inspection of areas where devices could be hidden, without electronic detection tools.

RF Detection

The process of scanning for radio frequency transmissions emitted by surveillance devices.

Smart Tag

A small consumer BLE tracking device (AirTag, Tile, SmartTag) designed for item recovery.

Stalking

A criminal offense involving repeated unwanted monitoring or tracking that causes fear or distress.

Surveillance

The monitoring of behavior, communications, or movement.

TSCM (Technical Surveillance Countermeasures)

Professional services and techniques used to detect and neutralize surveillance threats.

Vehicle Sweep

A comprehensive inspection of a vehicle for GPS trackers, listening devices, or hidden cameras.

Visual Inspection

A search conducted using sight and basic tools (flashlight, mirror) rather than electronic detectors.

Wiretap

Illegal interception of phone or communication lines.

Wired Microphone

A listening device connected directly to power or recording equipment via wires.

Wireless Transmitter

A device that sends audio, video, or data signals without physical connections.
